Founded by Rugged Men & Women

Lunenburg was chartered on July 5th, 1763 by Benning Wentworth, the governor of the colony of New Hampshire, before it became a state in 1788, and well before the boundaries of Vermont were formed. The first settlers then arrived the following year, bringing their provisions in canoes from Northfield, Massachusetts, more than 150 miles away.

Around 1768, more settlers arrived, building log huts on the Connecticut River, where fish and game were plentiful. These settlers were constantly under the threat of attack during the Revolutionary War, from Native Americans and British Loyalists.
